The sight and sound of paddles pulling gracefully through the water in rhythm is the definite thrill in Canoeing and Dragon Boat racing. It is a very exciting and colourful sport that demands team work, good physical fitness and explosive strength. However, it also needs grace, intelligence and a sense of rhythm. It is a very simple sport that is very difficult to master.
Dragon Boat racing was introduced to Bukit Panjang Government High School in 1999 by Mr Alfred Lim, a former Canoeist and Dragon Boater himself. The first BPGHS Dragon Boat Team was formed with ten very dedicated boys from the Normal Technical stream. The team trained in the school gym to develop fitness and strength. They also practiced boat paddling and racing skills at the Kallang Sea Sport Centre. Although this pioneer batch did not win any race during their first year, the members did not give up. Through their perseverance and passion for the sport, the CCA grew into a very respectable team today with more than 40 male members.
Canoeing was introduced in July 2005 to expose the members to a wider variety of training and skills. The members can choose to specialise in either the Kayak discipline where they paddle with double bladed paddles or the Canoe discipline where they paddle with single bladed paddles. Through the exposure to canoeing, the members were able to further develop themselves and to participate in more competitions. Some of the very talented members were selected to join the National Youth Canoeing Development Squad for grooming to become a National Athlete.
Every year, the team competes at the National Inter School Canoeing Competition and the National Inter School Dragon Boat Competition where all the best teams from various schools pit their racing ability against one another. Our canoeists are able to bring glory to the school, constantly emerging as the National Top Four team in these competitions and producing medals winners.
What is most important is that every canoeist in Bukit Panjang Government High School upholds the core values of the school.
