About Us

The Aesthetics Department comprises the Art, Design & Technology, Nutrition & Food Science and Music Unit. They provide students with diverse opportunities to explore, create and appreciate the arts. Lessons are modular in nature and guided by the 3E Framework – Excite, Engage and Excel, enabling students to develop creativity, confidence and appreciation through authentic learning experiences.

Art

The Art Unit offers the Art Elective Programme (AEP) and General Art Programme (GAP). The AEP is a four-year enriched art programme offered to artistically inclined students, who pursue Higher Art as a subject at Secondary Four. Beyond classroom learning, AEP students participate in enrichment workshops conducted by professional art practitioners, exploring areas such as printmaking, painting, sculpture and digital media. They also participate in annual combined-schools workshops and culminating in a biennial AEP Festival.

The GAP is offered to all Secondary One and Two students, providing a foundation in artistic skills, creative thinking and art appreciation. In BPGHS, learning outcomes are aligned with the development of art practitioners, art advocates and, for AEP students, art scholars. Students are also exposed to art and culture beyond Singapore through learning journeys and overseas programmes, including an Art Immersion Trip to Tokyo and Indonesia.

To broaden students’ exposure to the performing arts, the GROOVE IT Music and Dance Programme is organised for all Secondary Three students. Students choose from a range of music and dance modules, such as Bollywood, Hip Hop and Guitar, and learn from professional practitioners before showcasing their newly acquired skills through a performance.

Music

The Music Unit develops students’ awareness and appreciation of local and global music while nurturing their ability to express and communicate creatively. At the lower secondary level, students experience music through listening, creating and performing, exploring different musical styles and cultures while developing practical skills in singing and playing instruments such as the keyboard and ukulele.

Through collaborative performance projects, students apply musical knowledge, make creative decisions and develop confidence in performing for their peers. These experiences foster musicianship alongside creativity, collaboration, communication and confidence.

Design & Technology

The Design & Technology (D&T) Unit develops students’ design thinking and practical skills through hands-on, design-and-make experiences. Students learn to identify needs, conduct research, generate ideas, communicate designs, prototype solutions and evaluate their work. They explore the relationship between design, technology, function, aesthetics and sustainability while developing creativity and problem-solving skills.

Workshop-based projects allow students to work safely and systematically with materials, tools and processes. Through projects such as toiletries holders, mechanical cam toys and LED displays, students gain confidence in translating ideas into functional and meaningful products.

Nutrition and Food Science

Nutrition and Food Science (NFS) equips students with knowledge, skills and dispositions to make informed decisions about food, health, resources and everyday living. Through practical work, STEM learning and real-world investigations, students explore nutrition, food preparation, consumerism, financial literacy and sustainable consumption.

NFS develops students as Food Ambassadors, Food Innovators, Sustainable Practitioners and Discerning Consumers, while strengthening critical and inventive thinking, communication, collaboration and informed decision-making.
